Video - ISIS Sweden Terror Attack Trial Starts

In April 2017, an Uzbek man drove a truck at great speed through a pedestrian street in Sweden’s capital Stockholm, killing five people, in the country’s worst terrorist attack.

Mr Rakhmat Akilov, 39-years-old, had seen his asylum claim rejected in 2016 and was about to be put on a plane destined to fly him back to Uzbekistan. In the final days before the attack, he had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group.

After the attack, Mr Akilov immediately fled the scene and was arrested several hours later on the edge of Stockholm. Police interrogated him and he confessed that same evening.

Prosecution lawyer Mr Hans Ihrman told the court how Mr Akilov drove the stolen beer truck into shoppers in one of Stockholm's busiest retail hubs and added that the attack was nothing less than an "attack on our society."

Defence lawyer Mr Johan Eriksson claims that Mr Akilov had indeed been driving the truck and admitted that he had sworn allegiance to IS, but also told the court that the accused had been co-operative since his arrest.

The prosecution is looking for a life sentence for Mr Akilov.
