Florida Shooting Spurs Copycats, Arrests Across The Country

The shooter that rocked South Florida earlier this week and claimed the lives of 17 people has inspired a number of copycats to do the same. The devastating attack occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities arrested 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz for the crime and he has since confessed to the shooting. Now, police dealing with a number of threats of school shootings in North Carolina, Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey.

Police say many of the threats appeared to be hoaxes but others were well planned. One such example was in Vermont where a teen was arrested Friday after a tip was reported to law enforcement.

Vermont State Police Maj. Glenn Hall says Jack Sawyer, 18, wrote out detailed plans in a journal titled, "Diary of an Active Shooter" and had recently purchased a shotgun.

Sawyer planned to cause mass casualties for about a year according to Hall who said, "By the grace of God and the bravery of a courageous young woman did we avert disaster."

Similarly, a teen was arrested in South Carolina after a photo of him holding a rifle and wearing a mask was reported to authorities. The suspect told investigators the Snapchat post was a joke.

Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Bobo said the gun in the photo turned out to be a pellet gun but that didn't stop them from charging him.

Law enforcement around the country has been adamant about reminding people to report anything suspicious in the aftermath of the Florida shooting.
