The president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, John Bailey, is under investigation after allegations were levied against him of sexual harassment.
Sources close to the situation say the Academy received three harassment claims against Bailey and immediately opened a probe into the president. Bailey was recently elected in August as president of the institution and if he were forced to step down he would be replaced by Lois Burwell in the interim.
Burwell is a veteran makeup artist who is currently acting as vice president of the Academy. The next election is slated to take place in July and could mark the replacement of Bailey.
The accusations against Bailey come in the wake of the #Metoo movement which sought to root out sexual misconduct, especially in Hollywood. The Academy recently voted to expel Harvey Weinstein just 10 days after his history of sexual harassment was exposed by the New York Times.
The sexual misconduct recently exposed by the movement prompted the Academy to establish a code of conduct which could see members expelled for sexual abuse, harassment or discrimination. The Academy’s Membership and Administration Committee reviews any allegations made.
If the accusations are deemed credible, they may be forwarded to the full Board of Governors for disciplinary action.
