Video - Madrid Rioting Worsens As Police Is Accused Of Killing African Immigrants

Madrid’s Lavapies area is known for its high concentration of immigrants, mostly of African descent. For the past two nights this poorer part of the Spanish capital has been on fire after police was accused of killing two Senegalese immigrants during arrests in two separate nights.

Multiple videos with the hashtag #Lavapies have surfaced on the internet showing police shooting rubber bullets at rioters and officers using, what some would describe as, excessive force.

The unrest started after the death of a Senegalese migrant Thursday evening who was stopped by police for street vending.

As the man was an illegal immigrant for the past twelve years, he immediately ran from the police when they tried to arrest him and was then violently apprehended. Protesters claim that he died as a result of excessive force by the police.

Madrid, like many other Spanish cities, has been overrun in the past few years by African immigrants trying to sell their, mostly fake, goods on street corners for a 10% part of the price you would pay in the store next to where they are selling. Official Spanish vendors of course are not too happy about it and would like to see the police putting a halt to this.

"Municipal police arrived and chased him from Sol to Lavapiés with a motorbike," said Modou, a 25-year-old street vendor from Senegal who refused to provide his full name.

"At the end he died here."

The past night, the rioting worsened and according to the Spanish press another Senegalese immigrant was killed during the night.
