Indiana - Father Who Can’t Swim Dies Saving 3-Year-Old Daughter from Pond

An Indiana father gave literally all he could in an attempt to save his young daughter’s life. That attempt led to his shocking and tragic death.

The 24-year-old young father attempted to rescue his 3-year-old daughter from a car that had rolled into an Indianapolis pond, but the unfortunate thing was he didn’t know how to swim that resulted to his untimely death.

Her 24-year-old father, Anthony Burgess Jr., who helped rescue the girl from the pond, has died. <a href="https://t.co/JfVHlb7blO">https://t.co/JfVHlb7blO</a></p>&mdash; WKRG (@WKRG) <a href="https://twitter.com/WKRG/status/978611185460367360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 27, 2018</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The tragedy started when Anthony Burgess parked his car at an apartment complex Sunday with his little daughter inside. He made the mistake of leaving the engine running as he briefly went out to talk to a friend.

The little girl won’t stay put inside the car and tried to go with him, but authorities said the father ordered his child to go back inside the vehicle. The girl upon going back to the car, however, bumped into the gear shift, sending the car into a nearby retention pond, according to the story shared by authorities.

The father then wasted no time and jumped right into the water and got the girl out as the car went into the water. The problem was neither Burgess nor his friend who also jumped in to help save the girl, knew how to swim. Another bystander dove into the water to help save the girl and played a crucial role in the rescue.

First firefighters responded to the scene and confirmed that the girl was pulled out of the water, but that the father remained submerged on the water for a longer time. It took the efforts of divers several more minutes after to finally pull the father out of the water. It is estimated that Burgess was in the water for at least 19 minutes.

Burgess was given CPR on the scene of the incident. Father and child were brought to the hospital, where Burgess was pronounced dead. The little girl’s condition is described as stable.

Horrific!! But any father would do the same. Both me and my wife went into a frozen river to save our dog so I know there would be no stopping someone with their child.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Sad, so sad. Also a lesson never leave a toddler and a car with engine running together as it may spell disaster.

Sad, but also inspiring. This the type of guy who would charge a guy shooting up a church or a mall. His spirit should be honored. RIP.
