UK - 'Too Talented' For Jail Oxford Student Appeal Denied

Last year an Oxford student got out of jail time for stabbing her boyfriend because she was too smart for prison. Now, Lavinia Woodward has been denied permission to appeal her sentence. Woodward was described during her trial as an "extraordinarily able young lady."

The 24-year-old Oxford student avoided jail despite stabbing her Tinder boyfriend in the stomach while high on cocaine and alcohol. Woodward received a 10-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding but the judge suspended the sentence.

Judge Ian Pringle QC suspended Woodward's 10-month sentence saying he believed jail time would damage her hopes of becoming a surgeon. The judge's leniency caused outrage from protesters who said offenders from less privileged backgrounds were regularly incarcerated for similar crimes.

Even though she got her 10-month jail stint suspended, Woodward appealed her sentence but a judge at the Court of Appeal refused to allow her appeal to move forward after reviewing her application. The Oxford student once posed nude for a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer society photo shoot.

During a drug-fueled night of partying, Woodward lunged at Cambridge Ph.D. student Thomas at her home in Oxford. That night, Woodward's Tinder boyfriend contacted her mother over concerns she had been taking drugs. This sent Woodward into a rage and she smashed up her room at Christ Church College, punched Thomas in the face, and threw a laptop, a glass and a jar of jam at him.

The privileged Oxford student can be heard screaming incoherently in the background of the 999 call when a panicked Thomas tells the operator, "I think my girlfriend has taken a lot of drugs and is throwing a lot of stuff around the house. She is throwing things around… Ow!"

The 999 operator then asks, "You believe she is on drugs?" Thomas replies, "Yes, she's definitely on cocaine at lest." Woodward can then be heard shouting, "I'm not!"
