UK - Grandfather Wins 4-Year Old Soccer Bet ($24k) As Grandson Plays For ‘Three Lions’

The British love nothing more than a good old-fashioned bet. There is a reason why 60% of commercials during a Premier League match are for betting companies, and why you can get betting odds on pretty much anything (I kid you not) during a sports match in England.

Bookies in London will accept any bet and give you odds for it. You think it will snow on Easter? Accepted. You think the Queen is about to die in three months? Accepted. You think there will be a second Brexit referendum? Accepted.

And thus, when grandfather Mr. Trever Burlingham saw four years ago that his grandson Lewis Cook at the age of 17 was close to the first team of Leeds United, he went to his local bookie and bet £500 (700$) that his grandson was good enough to one day play for the English national team (known as the ‘Three Lions) before his 26th birthday.

Six months ago already, when national English coach Mr. Gareth Southgate added young Mr. Cook to his playing roster, Mr. Burlingham thought he could go cash, but the young lad didn’t play in the end and was only a substitute in the friendly matches against Germany and Brazil.

Yesterday evening, however, the now 21-year-old Mr. Lewis came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Italy at Wembley, netting his grandfather a cool £17,000 ($24,000).

He's done it! Lewis Cook comes on to make his senior debut for @England. According to bookmaker William Hill, this was their biggest payout of its type since Mr. Harry Wilson secured his grandfather a whopping £125,000 ($176,000) win for making his own debut in the national team of Wales back in 2013. His grandfather, Mr. Peter Edwards had put the incredible bet on when young Wilson …. was just 18-months-old. The bookmaker at that time gave him odds of 2,500 to 1.
