Paris, and with it the whole of France, drew to a halt today for Lieutenant-Colonel Mr Arnaud Beltrame, the national hero who gave his life for the nation last week when he swapped himself in exchange for a female hostage of the ISIS terrorist during the supermarket attack in Trèbes.

President Emmanuel Macron posthumously decorated Mr Beltrame with the “Légion d’Honneur”, France’s highest military accolade.

Mr Macron read a eulogy as the country wept and the coffin draped in the French flag was laid down in the cobbled courtyard of the Place des Invalides.

A minute's silence was observed at all police stations across France, and all-over Europe flags were lowered to half-mast on public buildings to pay respect.
