Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have traded insults after the Turkish President reacted harshly to the deadly clashes on the Gaza border during which sixteen Palestinians were killed as Israeli soldiers opened fire on some violent demonstrators (see our related coverage).

President Erdogan, speaking to a crowd of supporters during a televised speech continued on his first remarks right after the events when he had called Israel’s reaction ‘inhumane’.

Today he addressed the Israeli leader directly, saying: "Hey Netanyahu! You are occupier. And it is as an occupier that are you are on those lands. At the same time, you are a terrorist."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that he didn’t need Ankara's "moral lessons" as that country was currently bombing civilians in its actions abroad (the Turkish army is occupying the northern Syrian province of Afrin since a month).
Mr Netanyahu: "The most moral army in the world will not be lectured to on morality from someone who for years has been bombing civilians indiscriminately."
"Apparently this is how they mark April 1 in Ankara."
He then went on to refer to the Turkish actions over the past years: “Whoever occupies North Cyprus, invades the Kurdish belt and butchers civilians in Afrin should not preach to us about values and morality.”
