3-Year-Old Dies From Drug Overdose After Being Left Alone 22 Hours

A tragic case of child neglect has led to the death of 3-year-old Logan Starliper and she may have just become the youngest victim of an illegal drug overdose in Pennsylvania. Franklin County Coroner Jeff Conner said she is certainly the youngest in the county. She died alone and in her bed in Greencastle, Pennsylvania last January of a meth overdose.

Police announced criminal charges against the couple and said Logan's mother and her boyfriend regularly injected methamphetamine in their bedroom. Logan's toxicology report revealed she had methamphetamine and buprenorphine in her system when she died. Police also found several burned pipes in the home but did not say exactly how Logan was able to access the drugs.

The parents of the deceased are Brittany Higgins and Brian Bennett, both 29. They are facing five felonies each including third-degree murder, drug delivery resulting in death, involuntary manslaughter, and two counts of child endangerment. Bennett told investigators he kept his drugs on the nightstand by his bed while Higgins said she kept it on top of the dresser in her closet. Neither parents checked on Logan for 22 hours after putting her to bed the night before.

Franklin County District Attorney Matthew Fogal said in a statement, "The death of this sweet, innocent little girl is the most heartbreaking example of the danger the overdose epidemic has brought to our community and region." A neighbor described young Logan saying, "She was a sweetheart. She liked to dance around like a lot of three-year-olds."
