A 36-year-old woman got the surprise of her life regarding her parentage when she sent her DNA to Ancestry.com not knowing that doing so would open explosive revelations for her and her entire family. Through the website, they found out that her biological father shockingly turned out to be the same fertility doctor who was then helping her parents get pregnant in the 1970s.
Washington state resident Kelli Rowlette was so stunned by what she discovered that she decided to sue the fertility doctor, who also happens to be her biological father. She filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Dr. Gerald E. Mortimer who used his own sperm instead of a donor genetic material to impregnate her mother without both husband and wife’s knowledge and consent.
Rowlette said in her lawsuit that since the surprising discovery, she and her parents who are now divorced- Sally Ashby and Howard Rowlette- have been “suffering immeasurably.”
Sally Ashby became pregnant in August 1980. She continued consulting Mortimer for reproductive care even when she conceived a son later with her husband without any medical intervention or assistance.
Everything only made sense when Rowlette shared with her parents the information she got from Ancestry.com in October last year. The three of them then started investigating the name Mortimer and was greeted with the “devastating “ discovery and confronted with the decades-old lie.
The lawsuit claims that Dr. Mortimer knew Kelli Rowlette was his biological daughter all along but did not disclose such information to his then patient and her husband, the Rowlettes. The complaint added: “Dr. Mortimer fraudulently and knowingly concealed his use of his own genetic material in the Procedure.
It is not clear if the good doctor tried to remain in contact with his patient after Rowlette's birth.
