The tense standoff between police forces and supporters of former Brazilian President Lula Ignacio da Silva has come to an end with the latter handing himself over to police and beginning a 12-year prison sentence for corruption.
The 72-year-old former Brazilian president, who led the country from 2003 to 2011, left the building belonging to the country’s steel-workers union on Sunday morning to be taken away in a convoy of black police cars.

Mr Lula da Silva: "I am the only human being to be put on trial for an apartment which does not belong to me. I will comply with their warrant. You'll see that I will come out of this bigger, stronger."
The former president will be flown to the southern city of Curitiba where he will serve his sentence in a "specially designed jail cell".
