A missile strike at a Syrian air base Monday morning has set off a flurry of speculation, but the Pentagon was quick to deny any involvement after the Syrian state media claimed the strikes were "an American aggression." According to a war monitoring group, the airstrike killed Iranian-backed militia members and now Russia has come forward to point the finger at two Israeli jets that the Ministry of Defense says fired the missiles.

Russia's Ministry of Defense said, "Two F-15 aircraft of the Israeli Air Force, without entering Syrian airspace, struck eight controlled missiles at the airfield." The Syrian state-sponsored SANA news agency described several casualties as a result of the missile attack on the T4 military air base in Homs province. A war monitoring group based in London known as Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said 14 people were killed in the airstrike, among them were foreign nationals.
Russia's Ministry of Defense alleged that two Israeli F-15s fired eight missiles at the T4 base just hours after a spokesman for the Pentagon, Christopher Sherwood, said that the "Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria." The timing led to several countries pointing a finger at the U.S. for the airstrikes but Russia says otherwise.

A suspected poison gas attack Saturday on the last bastion of the Syrian opposition left at least 40 people dead including families found in their homes, according to activists and local rescue workers. President Trump promised those responsible for the chemical attack have a "big price to pay" and called the Syrian President Bashar Assad an "animal".

The reports of the latest chemical attack say it appeared to target civilians and young children but they could not be verified. The Syrian army has closed off the area and surrounded it preventing access from the outside world. Israel has not confirmed that it was responsible for the latest missile strikes in Syria but it has attacked Assad's forces and his Iranian allies in the past.
