Whereas last week we informed you how the eastern Mexican city of Cancun had recorded a groundbreaking 14 murders in a 36-hour-spree (thus explaining the US’ assignment of ‘unsafe to travel’), yesterday it was the tourists on the beaches of Mexico’s western city Acapulco that saw an unfortunate visitor wash up ashore as the dead body of a bullet-riddled man drifted slowly to their feet.

The scenes, widespread over social media by now even though soldiers patrolling the beaches tried to get tourists to stop taking pictures, show the reality of the brutal violence gripping the once-idyllic tourist hotspot in Mexico.

Afterwards, armed troops and police could be seen carrying the body off Caletilla quickly.

In Acapulco, which is in one of the poorer Mexican states, many people depend on tourism as their main source of income. It is therefore understood that because of the high crime rate, many of them bring guns to the beach as protection.
Some 25,000 murders were alleged to have taken place in Mexico last year as the crime now hits the tourist hotspots like Cancun and Acapulco as well.
Much to the dismay of the local tourist board, the US State Department assigned many destinations in Mexico as ‘unsafe for travel’ in the beginning of the year.
