A UK teenager named Kane Gamble was sentenced to two years imprisonment for hacking into the accounts of CIA Chief John Brennan and FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano. He did so at the age of 15 from his mum’s house in Leicestershire. As from June 2015 until February 2016, young Mr Gamble was able to access email and phone accounts of the US families, get his hands on ‘extremely sensitive’ documents with information on the military and intelligence planning in Iraq and Afghanistan and even control appliances in the house of the director of Homeland Security.

Judge Mr Haddon-Cave said young Mr Gamble had ‘revelled’ in the attacks: “This was an extremely nasty campaign of politically motivated cyberterrorism. The victims would have felt seriously violated.”

Traces of his cyberterrorism could be found on the family TV of the secretary of homeland security, Mr Jeh Johnson, where he posted a message on the TV stating “I Own You.”
Prosecutor for the UK State, Mr John Lloyd-Jones QC, said: “So many of the American witnesses attest to a drop in confidence in the use of portals, many of the agencies withdrawing their contributions, reducing the effectiveness in the wider law enforcement community in America.”

The teenager’s lawyer, Mr William Harbage tried to ensure the court that young Mr Gamble had never meant to “harm and traumatise people on an individual basis”.
Mr Harbage: “In a naive, immature and childish way, he thought he could do something about it, he could make a nuisance of himself by targeting people in America and that would somehow get them to change US policy as a result of what he was doing from his bedroom.”
“When members of the families were brought into it, he did not think through the consequences. The thought seems to have been: ‘I want to grab attention of the US government and getting the families involved is some way that will grab attention even more.’”
