The clever actions of the semi-truck drivers were able to block the overpass completely across the highway so that if the man who was threatening to jump did so, his fall would only cause minor injuries, versus death.
Over a dozen tractor-trailer drivers pulled their big rigs underneath the overpass to assist the Metro Detroit Michigan State Police in their efforts to talk the man down from the overpass, who had claimed several times he wanted to end his life.
MSP also wanted to speak out against the legitimate risk of depression that leads many individuals to take their own lives.
Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said his department first received a call early on Tuesday about a man standing on the overpass on Interstate 696 in Huntington Woods, who had repeatedly told passer-by drivers that he was going to jump.

The thirteen tractor-trailer drivers were able to close nearly all potential landing zones with the tops of the trailers they were pulling. These drivers, who's quick thinking likely saved a life, prevented the suicidal man from ending his life by way of brutal fall.
Lt. Shaw not only gave praise to these drivers, but said that truck drivers more often than not assist his department in a variety of ways. However, this incident showcased how quick thinking and brilliantly timed cooperation between police and the drivers likely saved a life.
He adds there are “many other options out there aside from taking your own life.”
MSP tweeted, “This photo does show the work troopers and local officers do to serve the public. But also in that photo is a man struggling with the decision to take his own life. Please remember help is available through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.”
Bravo to these fine drivers who were able to prevent a tragedy, and a huge victory for the Michigan State Police in the Detroit Metro area who were able to circumvent a disaster.
