The highly anticipated meeting between Mike Pompeo and North Korean dictator Kim Jon Un that took place on Easter weekend were released Thursday. The meeting has been surrounded in secrecy until news that Pompeo had met with Kim Jong Un surfaced prompting much speculation. Pompeo's meeting with the North Korean dictator appears to have been a success, so much of a success that he has since been appointed as Secretary of the State.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed the Easter weekend rendezvous and shared images of Pompeo and Kim Jong Un shaking hands. "Great to have Secretary Pompeo confirmed," Sanders tweeted. "He will do an excellent job helping @POTUS lead our efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. (photos from previously confirmed Easter weekend trip)." The classified meeting was meant to set the groundwork for President Trump to meet with the North Korean leader later this year.
Prior to the trips confirmation, Trump said that the two countries were holding direct talks at "extremely high levels" in preparation for the extraordinary meeting ahead. The successful Easter weekend meeting was followed by Kim Jong Un agreeing to shut down North Korea's nuclear programs, although there is some evidence that the real reason he agreed to shut them down was that he accidentally destroyed them.

The successful meeting with Kim Jong Un earned Pompeo the role as 70th Secretary of State. He was sworn in Thursday and state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert tweeted an image of the ceremony.
