The band said in a statement that the exciting Abba avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence. They felt that after 35 years, it could be fun to “join forces again and go into the recording studio.”

The members did just that. They added in the statement: “And it was like time had stood still and we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!”

The band also shared that one of the new songs called I Still Have Faith in You will be part of a TV special to be shown in December. Abba’s statement concluded: “We may have come of age, but the song is new. And it feels good.”

The two-hour TV special will be co-produced by NBC and the BBC. Abba will perform as computer-generated avatars. The band had also been digitally-scanned and “de-aged” to look like the way they did in 1979 when they performed their third and final tour.

Abba will also have a world tour next year.

Abba has a formidable line-up of global hits that took the world by storm including Knowing Me, Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, Dancing Queen and The Name of the Game. They have sold millions of records worldwide that topped the charts.

The band was formed in Stockholm in 1972. They comprised two couples: Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog; and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, all of whom had successful musical careers in Sweden. The group first burst on to the international musical stage after winning the Eurovision singing contest in Brighton in 1974 with their song Waterloo.

Abba’s jukebox musical Mama Mia! Debuted in the West End in 1999 and still running both in London and worldwide.
