A while ago I wrote an article about tensions and passion in Greece running high when it comes to local derby matches (when the President of Thessaloniki entered the match with a loaded gun, see our related coverage). This time around we go to the neighbouring country Turkey where local derby matches are considered religiously significant.

And thus, when die-hard fan Mr Ali Demirkaya was banned from the stadium of Denizlispor for a year, he had to come up with an original idea to see his favourite sports team take on Gaziantepspor.

Mr Demirkaya: "That match was very important for our team (Denizlispor). I had to go to the police station to sign a paper to show that I am not watching the match in the stadium. Then I quickly went to rent the crane."
"I paid 354 liras ($85) for the rent. I started watching but police officers didn't allow me to watch until the end."

Videos posted online show Mr Demirkaya cheering on Denizlispor on while atop a crane he had rented as fans inside the Denizli Atatürk Stadium cheered down below and applauded their colleague for not wanting to miss the excitement of the game.

Mr Demirkaya was happy afterward as Denizlispor won the match against Gaziantepspor 5-0.
