It’s May 1 which means Labour day in Europe, also called International Workers Day. It’s also a day for the socialist/left-wing parties to ask for more rights for their members and to hold parades in Western European capitals.
Nowhere is this truer than in Paris, where the French government of President Emmanuel Macron has been locked in battle with the unions for months now trying to reform labour laws which would make it easier for companies to hire and fire personnel.

For this reason, the socialist party held a large manifestation walking in the Parisian centre. At the same time though, the extreme left anti-fascists and communists had gathered some 1,200 youngsters masked in ‘cagoules’ who wound up playing a cat and mouse game with the police.

In their path of destruction so far: a McDonalds, a bank and a local Peugeot garage. Several cars were burned, and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the police. Clearly, anything international or capitalist was targeted.
Around 5 pm this afternoon the local authorities had enough and charged them with water cannons and tear gas.

Police say the so-called ‘Black Bloc’ anarchists group is responsible for this year’s violence after they launched calls on social media calling for a ‘revolutionary day’.

Demonstrators could be seen waving Soviet flags and shouting anti-fascist slogans. Some even started to build barricades in the streets.

At the time of writing, the Parisian police had already made 200 arrests.
