From The Underbelly: Hawaii's Volcano In Pictures

One of Nature's most terrifying monsters are volcanoes and this week in Hawaii, Mount Kilauea roared to life. The eruption of Mount Kilauea was preceded by hundreds of earthquakes ranging from light tremors to magnitude 6.9. One resident of Papaikou, Hawaii shared a video of the largest earthquake from inside their home as the Earth rumbled to life.

The most terrifying thing about volcanoes is the massive energy and molten rock that exists right under our very feet. When we think of the Earth and our homes, we think of a solid foundation that has been here for millions of years. In reality, the Earth is constantly shifting beneath our feet but we are too small to notice it and are shielded from its effects by the Earth's outer crust. When the pressure becomes too great, the contents of the Earth's underbelly is expelled through volcanoes.

Mandatory evacuations of parts of the Big Island such as Leilani Estates were issued and some people have yet to leave. Since the initial eruption of Mount Kilauea on Friday, new fissures have opened up and molten lava has been erupting ever since. You can even view a live-feed of Mount Kilauea in Hawaii here.

The United States Geological Survey said, "Areas downslope of erupting fissures are at risk of lava inundation. The general area of Leilani Estates remains at the greatest risk. However, as the eruption progresses, other areas of the lower east rift zone may also be at risk." Hawaii County Civil Defense officials took an aerial tour of the area Sunday in an attempt to survey the damage.

Mayor Harry Kim said, "This is a very fast-moving situation. This is unfortunately not the end." He reiterated his warning Sunday saying, "All of us have got to remember this is a tragedy on them and we have to work …. to minimize it as best as possible. I'm from Puna so I am not going to be a hypocritical. That’s my home and I love Puna. There is no place to me more beautiful … and we know the hazards."

Shane Turpin, a resident of Leilani Estates with Lava Ocean Tours said, "Some people are definitely going to be losing some stuff today if this keeps going. It's moving fast, I watched it go about two poles, this thing is 100 yards long … it's going." Hawaii County Civil Defense authorities also warned the situation would get worse saying, "First responders may not be able to come to the aid of residents who refuse to evacuate."
