The feud between Israel and Iran playing out in Syria was escalated early Thursday when Iranian forces fired 20 rockets at Israeli front-line military positions in the Golan Heights district of Syria. The attacks triggered a substantial response from Israel as tensions in Syria continue to rise. A statement from the Israeli military said its Iron Dome rocket defense system intercepted incoming projectiles and the ones it missed caused only minor damage.

The Syrian capital of Damascus shook Thursday morning with sounds of explosions as Syrian air defenses worked through the night. An Israeli military official said they are targeting Iranian positions within Syria. Syria's state news agency SANA reported a Syrian military official said the missiles hit air defense positions, radar stations, and a weapons warehouse but said most of the incoming rockets were intercepted by missile defense systems.
An Israeli newspaper reported an unnamed security official as saying Israel's attacks in Syria were the most extensive since the two countries signed a disengagement agreement after the October war of 1973. Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said Iran's Al Quds force fired rockets at several Israeli bases though he gave no insight into how Israel determined the Iranian's were behind the attack. Conricus said Israel "views this Iranian attack very severely. This event is not over."

Syrian activists shared footage of alleged Israeli airstrikes hitting targets near Damascus. In a rare admission from an Israeli official, Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on twitter Israel was "acting against Iranian targets inside Syria". Syrian media reported the hostilities began with Israeli attacks on Syrian positions in southern Syria from across the border. They also reported Syria then fired missiles at Israeli forces. Syrian TV station Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen said at least 50 missiles were fired during the exchange with Israeli positions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday to discuss military coordination in Syria. "I think that matters were presented in a direct and forthright manner, and this is important. These matters are very important to Israel’s security at all times and especially at this time," Netanyahu said.
