Michigan - Troy Police Department's Latest Hire Is A Feline

Following a successful interview, the latest recruit at the Troy Police Department in Michigan was asked to raise her right paw as she was officially sworn in before Judge Kirsten Nielsen Hartig and Judge Maureen McGinnis. The kitten named "Pawfficer Donut" was given to the TPD by the Humane Society in Michigan so that she could become a full-time Pawfficer.

Chief Gary Mayer of the Troy Police Department said, "We are using social media to engage the public that we serve and to get the message out that police are human, too, and we want to show we have a side of us that is beyond law enforcement." Surprisingly, Pawfficer Donut is not the TPD's first feline officer.

The TPD's first feline candidate was a kitten named Badges after it was discovered to have feline leukemia which is a deadly disease that is contagious to other cats. The officers at Troy Police Department were "distraught" by the news that Badges was fatally ill. Prior to becoming employed at the TPD, the 10-week-old Pawfficer participated in the Michigan Humane Society’s In-Home Heroes program.

A representative of the TPD said that although Pawfficer Donut now has the job, Badges would "always be our first Pawfficer". The duties of Officer Pawfficer are to help raise awareness for pet adoptions and rescues. She will also help facilitate and interact with the Troy community.

The Troy Police Department jokingly shared a video of two cats pawing at one another with the caption, "Actual footage from the Police ACATemy Defensive Tactics course."
