The ill-fated Boeing 737 plane was rented by Cubana airlines. Cubana just confirmed that the flight headed to the city of Holguin, on the eastern part of Cuba, has crashed. Holguin is a domestic flight of about one hour and 20 minutes.
State TV reported that ambulances and firefighters have responded and are on the scene already for possible search and rescue operations.
Cubana said it has no immediate information on the number of passengers aboard the tragic plane. Other media reports, however, say 104 were on board the said plane that crashed after takeoff in Havana, Cuba.
It has yet to be officially established if there are casualties from the crash.
AFP reported that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel arrived at the scene. While this can not be fully confirmed yet, the President was quoted to have said that there are “ a high number of victims.”
A photo posted online supposedly taken from inside the airport shows a plume of black smoke rising from the end of a runway as firefighters responded to the incident.
