The mindbending illusion that caused some people to hear Yanny and some to hear Laurel is like an advanced meme. People were saying Yanny and Laurel everywhere. But if you thought that one was weird, give this clip a listen. Depending on which words you think about, the actual words you hear can change. The battling words are "brainstorm" and "green needle".

Sure enough, the brain seems to bounce back and forth between hearing either "brainstorm" or "green needle". Some people even reported hearing "brain needle" and "green storm". This Mindbender is supposed to function the same way as Yanny and Laurel. People's varying levels of sensitivities to the pitch of the sounds seems to dictate which word camp they belong to.
The word "brainstorm" has more low frequencies while "green needle" is stronger in higher ones. Another factor in getting the illusion to work is the audio quality, it seems the quality has to be bad for it to work. In the case of this latest Mindbender, it seems the recording is so closely balanced along the pitch line that a simple thought is enough to change which word the listener hears.

The bizarre recording was first found to have the illusionary qualities by a Reddit user named "squidJeep". The user originally posted the video clip of a toy that emits the sounds and called it "black magic fuckery." As for which word was actually recorded in the toy, a toy review video featured the name of the toy which is Brainstorm.
