Italy - Train Slams Into Big-Rig Truck, 2 Dead, 20 Wounded (Video)

New Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who heads a populist government since yesterday, has a first tragedy to deal with when a train in the north of the country hit a truck overnight which led to two deaths and multiple wounded.

The accident, which saw the train driver being killed, occurred in the late evening Wednesday in northern Italy close to the city of Turin. The video footage streamed on national TV showed how three of the train's carriages came off the rails.

RFI (the Italian Rail Network) sent out a statement regarding the accident: “The regional train 10027 Turin-Ivrea hit a heavy goods vehicle that had stopped on a functioning railway crossing after crashing through the barriers.”

“According to early information, the driver of the train was killed and many other passengers have been injured,' the statement added.”

A second victim was taken to a Turin hospital by helicopter with severe injuries but unfortunately declared dead on arrival. Some five other passengers are still in critical condition.

23-year-old Mr Paolo Malgioglio, who was a passenger on the train, explained: “Everything happened so fast, I felt the train break suddenly and then I found myself in hell and around me everything was black.”

An eyewitness declared that the truck, which had a Lithuanian license plate, looked too heavily loaded and got stuck on the crossing when the barriers came down.
