Local teachers were protesting at the municipality to demand higher wages and had blocked off the street. The truck saw this too late and his brakes failed him. According to the public prosecutor, there is no foul play.
Before the truck slammed into the group of people he had already crashed into multiple vehicles. The truck driver was only lightly wounded and remains in shock.

As the police knew the teachers would strike, they were present in large numbers. It is believed that thanks to their presence during the accident, many lives were saved and without them, the death toll would have been much higher.
