Arkansas - Convicted Child Rapist Escaped Prison, Sought Refuge in Church

He probably thought it was the “safest” place to stay, but he was soon proven wrong. A convicted child rapist who escaped a Kansas correction facility spent a few hours as a “free man” at his local church, joining the service and even singing along with the rest as if he’s just any regular churchgoer. The cops soon caught up with him and arrested him in his “place of refuge” because a criminal is a criminal whether he is in prison or a holy place.

The escaped inmate is Robert Terrell, 36, who was convicted in 2002 for raping a child under the age of 15. He was busted in July for parole violation.

Terrel managed to escape by climbing a fence, barely three days after arriving at Winfield Correctional Facility.

Local churchgoers at Silverdale Community in Arkansas City proved crucial in recognizing Terrel and alerting the authorities about his presence inside the church. The church is located around 18 miles from the prison.

Resident Dianne Goatley immediately recognized the escapee from a wanted photo her husband happened to show her just before going to church. She said that it helps that it is such a small and close-knit community that almost everyone is familiar with everyone else, that it would be easy to spot a stranger in the crowd.

Goatley added: “I walked through and spoke to everyone and turned to him and said ‘good morning’ or something like that and he responded.”

Goatley discreetly called the police. Responding officers were just as discreet. They chose not to interrupt the service once they arrived. They arrested Terrell after the service concluded.

The convict will be moved to a higher-security prison.
