UK - Royal Navy To Intervene In International ‘Scallop War’ (Video)

The headlines in the French and British press over the past few days bear a reminder that although these two nations are in an ‘entente cordiale’ and have vowed never to go at war with each other anymore, the fishermen on the North Sea channel do not see it that way.

French fishing boats have started going out to sea to fish their beloved ‘coquilles Saint-Jacques’ (or ‘scallops’) much earlier than foreseen under EU-regulation as they noticed that the British boats did likewise. With Brexit looming around the corner, the British are no longer obliged to obey the rules of the EU which state when you can fish in the North Sea.

The French, fearing that the Brits would clear out all the fish, left from Trouville-sur-Mer, Port-en-Bessin and Ouistreham and engaged their British counterparts by bashing into their boats and throwing bottles at them.

French fisherman Mr. Stephane Le Francois explained that the French would regroup and come back in larger numbers if the Brits showed up again, stating: “We are now much more motivated.”

“We won't use weapons, unlike what some people are saying in England, but we will have other things on board that are a little different. A little less aggressive.”

One of the leading Brexit politicians in the UK, Mr. Micheal Gove, said the government was looking into the possibility of having Royal Navy ships accompany the British vessels in the coming days.

Mr. Gove: “My heart goes out to the British fishermen who were caught up in the terrible scenes that we saw happen earlier this week.”

“They were fishing entirely legally, they had every right to be in those waters and we talked to the French authorities in order to ensure that we have a protocol.”
