French President Macron is not having his best ‘rentrée’ (a period when holidays are over and work begins again in French-speaking Europe which consists of France, Luxembourg and parts of Belgium and Switzerland) as 2 of his most popular ministers both quit and a fresh scandal which saw him mocking the French cultural heritage leaves him at a new low in polls.
This afternoon, France's Sports Minister, the very popular Ms Laura Flessel (a former Olympian) announced she was stepping down from President Macron’s government. Her resignation comes just a week after the environment minister quit his post during a fiery live radio interview.

Although the resignation of Ms Flessel was still friendly, the one of last week was not. At the time, Mr Nicolas Hulot announced during a live radio interview that he was resigning out of despair over the government's hollow environmental commitments.

The remarks reportedly enraged French president Macron, seen as a champion of the Climate change movement in Europe, as he once famously pledged to "make our planet great again" after US President Donald Trump quit the Paris climate deal.

French magazine Paris Match published a poll today which showed that only 31 percent of respondents were happy with Mr Macron's performance over the past 16 months.
Furthermore, it is clear that the enthusiasm over his presidency is eroding across all age groups on both the left and the right. Mr Macron presented himself and his political party ‘En Marche’ as centrists.

All this means that Mr Macron, who was at record approval rating when elected in 2017, is now looking at a lower approval rate than that of his predecessor Mr Francois Hollande at the same stage of his presidency.

The Socialist leader Hollande, at that moment in the second year of his presidency, became unable to make a turnaround and went on to grow so unpopular that he became the very first president of the Fifth Republic not seek re-election.
Mr Macron has been locked in a war of words over the issue of immigration with some of his European counterparts (Italy, Hungary, Poland) and is mostly seen as the only true ally of Ms Merkel (Germany) who also sees her own popularity waning.

Seriously? He achieved being less popular than Hollande? That's really bad for him.
