A Maryland woman had the kind heart to adopt a pit bull two weeks ago. Unfortunately, the same dog mauled her to death on Monday.
Howard County police said the victim was identified as Robin Conway. Her husband discovered what tragically happened to her when he came home and saw the animal standing over her body.
The husband tied the pet to a fence at their Columbia, Md. Home before calling 911. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene after cops and paramedics arrived.
The victim’s sister, Susan LeClair said Conway loved animals and was truly excited about her recently adopted a pit bull. She added: “She was a caring person above all. She cared about animals; she cared about her family; she cared about people.”
Responding cops said the dog still behaved menacingly even after the fatal attack on Conway. It was even aggressively lunging while on leash and barking. The officers waited for the dog to visibly calm down before it was euthanized.
The state medical examiner is set to perform an autopsy on Conway’s body as no cause of death has been confirmed yet for the 64-yer-old fatality.
A necropsy is also expected to be performed to determine if the pit bull suffered from rabies or another medical issue. Cops said there had been no previous calls to animal control from Conway’s address.
The Howard County Police Department said the dog was adopted outside of Maryland. It was not clarified if the dog had a history or issues with aggression before it was adopted to Conway. It is not clear if due diligence was performed before the adoption was completed.
It is also not clear if anyone has any potential legal liability for what happened, in case the family of Conway wishes to pursue any action for her death.
One of Conway’s neighbors was stunned with the tragedy. Don Browning said: “It’s scary that a dog would attack like that. But you have to keep that in mind, especially if you get the dog out of the shelter because you don’t know what the upbringing was like.”
It is not yet certain if the unfortunate case will be treated by authorities and animal lovers as an unfortunate but isolated case, or if it will have an impact on people’s willingness to adopt animals especially from the same area.
People were shocked and upset on social media with what happened to Conway.

Whoever owns or plans to take a Pit Bull, a breed that's for mauling things to death, should have their heads checked.
