France - Lyon School “Blackfaced” Students For US Website

The Emile Cohl art school in Lyon is in the midst of an international scandal after certain students noted that they had been ‘blackfaced’ in pictures on their US partner website.

The school, seeking to open a second venue in the US, had copied their French website over to a US-based URL and the class presentation had been slightly ‘retouched’, aka certain students had been ‘browned’ in order to make it seem more normal and diverse to a US crowd.

Already on September 7th several students discovered that the physical appearance of some of them had been modified, their skin deliberately darkened and other black people had been added.

"We have made our arrangements by having this transferred data deleted immediately without our authorization," the school explained, stating that the website copy was provided by an outside company and that they had now "broken the provider's contract."

"We apologized to those concerned because it goes without saying that we disapprove of this process. We do not need to manipulate images to demonstrate our openness to the world as it is."

However, the school’s excuses have not fully convinced some users, who left their skepticism on social networks.

The person uploading the pictures, which have since disappeared from the school’s websites, stated: “For the opening of Emile Cohl’s new wing in Los Angeles they fiddled the class picture by adding students and retouching some skin colors to simulate a class of more varied origins.”
