Miami – ‘Communist’ Restaurant Chain Where Maduro Dined Met By Exiled Venezuelan Protesters (Video)

The Turkish restaurateur Salt Bae, who shot to worldwide Instagram fame with a video showcasing his flamboyant way with a steak knife and salt has been met with social media furor this week after he showed footage of him serving Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro in his Istanbul restaurant.

After US Republican Senator Marco Rubio (who funnily didn’t know who Salt Bae was at first) tweeted his Miami restaurant address through to his followers, the Salt Bae restaurant chain has been met daily by protesters who claim that ‘butchers stick together’ and ‘only animals dine in this communist restaurant’.

The sight of President Nicolas Maduro wearing a Patek Philippe watch of $105.000 and eating steak was the final straw for many Venezuelans apparently. The online mocking of Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe – known as Salt Bae for his meme-friendly theatrics – means that the chef has seen a barrage of 1-star reviews on Yelp and Tripadvisor ever since (for all his restaurants worldwide) and a flood of reservation cancellations.

Accompanied by the hashtag #ShameOnYouSaltBae, many slammed the Turkish restaurateur for not thinking about the Venezuelans themselves who suffer real hardship during the presidency of Mr. Maduro. The UN admitted recently that nine in 10 households in the South American country live on less than $1 a day and 60% of the population lost an average of 24lb in weight last year because of the effect of hyperinflation on food prices.

Yelp started moderating posts about the chef’s restaurants after multiple one-star reviews brought down his standing.

Comments read: “Was planning on visiting, however, noticed they feed communist dictators in there.”

Another claimed: “overpriced and low morals.”

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Maduro said on TV that he had personally invited the chef to come to Caracas and teach a cooking class. While speaking, the Venezuelan president gladly showed how Salt Bae had taught him his signature sprinkling technique.
