Now New Zealand – Needles In Strawberries Found In Supermarkets (Video)

Do not misunderstand me. There is nothing laughable about gun control, but you can hardly expect the current generation of political world leaders to take the thousands of 15-year-olds marching for ‘new gun control laws’ serious when after a few weeks of marching and blocking roads they go back to snacking on Tide pods (USA), taking XTC pills (Europe) or sticking needles in fruit (Oceania).

Yes, indeed, the 15-year old (who cannot be named for legal reasons) who felt he was badly treated by his employer and started sticking needles in strawberries (he was arrested on Friday) might have just started a new ‘social media’ trend. We can all only hope that platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp immediately report anyone ‘daring’ a friend to do the same.

The Australian scare of metal needles found in strawberries (and unfortunately other fruit as well) has now spread to New Zealand after a punnet of the fruit in an Auckland supermarket found to contain needles as well.

The Countdown supermarket chain said it had taken a brand of Australian strawberries off the shelves.

More than 100 reports of needles found in supermarket fruit in Australia. Police admit that most are copycat cases and social media jokes.

The New Zealand Countdown stores issued a statement: "We take food safety very seriously."

"Customers can return any Choice brand of strawberries they may have at home to Countdown for peace of mind and a full refund."

Just last week, the Australian government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison has raised the maximum prison sentence for fruit tampering from 10 to 15 years and offers a reward of A$100,000 ($72,000) for anyone offering information.

Meanwhile, farmers have been forced to dump tonnes of unwanted fruit. The strawberry scare, which has hit them during peak production, will damage sales in an industry worth about A$130m a year. The price of strawberries has dropped by 50% because of the scandal.
