Newly appointed US ambassador to NATO, Ms Kay Bailey Hutchison (a former Republican Senator from Texas) suffered an unfortunate ‘slip of the tongue’ this week when she said NATO was prepared to consider a military strike against Russia if needed.
Perhaps the conservative Brussels press corps was not ready for the harsh words of Ms Hutchinson of course, but it is clear that she shoots from the hip when it comes to giving Russia a response in case of war.
Answering a hypothetical question on the Russian development of missiles during a NATO press briefing, Ms Hutchinson stated that the organization would always seek a diplomatic solution at first but if Russia were indeed developing a ground-launched system in breach of a Cold War treaty that could allow Russia to launch a nuclear strike on Europe at short notice, a strike could be considered.
Her exact words in response to the question: “At that point, we would be looking at the capability to take out a Russian missile that could hit any of our countries.”

“Counter measures by the United States would be to take out the missiles that are in development by Russia in violation of the treaty. They are on notice.”
Her words were cause for concern in Russia, which reacted furiously via its foreign ministry spokesperson, Ms Maria Zakharova: "It seems that people who make such statements do not realize the level of their responsibility and the danger of aggressive rhetoric."

Over in Washington, State Department spokesperson Ms Heather Nauert said the United States had for some time argued that Moscow was not in compliance: “What Ambassador Hutchison was talking about was improving overall defense and deterrence posture.”
“The United States is committed to upholding its arms control obligations and expects Russia to do the very same thing,” she said whilst also adding that the US was currently discussing the issue with its NATO allies.
