France looked in horror to the process of Ms. Alexandra Damien, a Parisian woman who made financial gains from the 2015 Paris terror attacks by claiming falsely to be a victim.

33-year-old Ms. Damien pocketed up to $23,000 from funds set up for victims in the aftermath of the attacks carried out by Islamic State which killed more than 130 people on 13 November 2015.

She claimed to need the money for therapy sessions paid for by the French Association of Terror Victims.

Ms. Damien used a Facebook invite to one of the bars that were attacked that night, Le Carillon, as proof even though camera shots showed that she was never there.

Later that evening, on social media, she posted photos of what she said was a scar inflicted on her by the Kalashnikov gun of one of the attackers and asked for support from her followers.

In order to continue playing her role as a victim, Ms. Damien had her arm tattooed with the motto of the city of Paris - "Fluctuat nec mergitur" - a Latin phrase meaning "she is tossed by the waves but does not sink," to show her support for the city.

Back in November 2015, Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in a series of coordinated attacks on the French capital.

The attacks targeted the Bataclan concert hall, a football stadium where France-Germany was being played and several restaurants and bars in the center.

Ms. Damien offered a tearful apology for her actions during the trial which saw her being jailed for six months in prison for fraud and perjury.
