Financial Times global affairs correspondent Mr Gideon Rachman (winner of the 2016 Orwell prize for political journalism and named as commentator of the year at the European Press Prize awards) seems to have had a change of heart.
In today’s printed editorial the senior opinion maker of Europe’s largest business newspaper admitted that he had been wrong about the US’s 45th President.
Just two years ago, Mr Rachman had penned a long warning about a world that could see Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Marine Le Pen lead some of the world’s biggest countries, and the Financial Times board was convinced that none of it would be for the better.
Fast forward two years and the stock market performance under the current White House administration coupled with Mr Trump’s willingness to become the first US president willing to take on the might of the Chinese economy has landed him praise.
Mr Rachman is not the first to admit that the world and its outlook has changed under President Trump.
Even current non-fiction bestselling writers like Mr Yuval Harari or Mr Steven Pinker admit in their latest manuscripts that Mr Trump might be rough around the edges, he has indeed changed history for the US.

As Mr Rachman put it, the current US president was the first “to notice the huge gap that had opened up between elite American opinion and that of the wider public on a range of issues from immigration, to trade, to identity politics.”
As to immigration, just as writer Mr Douglas Murray stated in his excellent book ‘the strange death of Europe,’ the elite European politicians currently still do not dare to say what some 75% of the public feels on immigration as it would not be ‘politically correct.’

According to Mr Murray, this largely explains why since 2016 rightwing and populist parties in Europe have won every election that has been organized.
Just last weekend, the Polish law and justice party confirmed that when it comes to Eastern Europe, conservative and anti-immigration voices will remain in power.
Over in the US, Mr Trump was the first candidate to effectively exploit the divisions that had grown between what the mainstream US media (CNN, MSNBC and ABC) felt about immigration and what the general public (or at least a large part of it) felt about it.
The POTUS of the last two years could be seen saying and doing things that conventional analysts regarded as political suicide. But his instincts proved better than those of the pundits. Despite his age, Mr Trump also “got” new media and has been exploit it far more adeptly than other ‘classic’ politicians.
In conclusion, Mr Rachman states that: “the early signs are promising. The US economy is booming, while China’s economy is sputtering. The US Supreme Court has been reshaped. Under crushing American pressure, Canada and Mexico have agreed to rewrite their trade deal with America and other US allies are showing signs of falling into line. Whatever the results of the midterm elections next month, Mr Trump stands a good chance of re-election in 2020.”
