The next internet ‘challenge’ poised to take the Western world by storm in the coming weeks is coming out of supposedly Communist countries Russia and China where the rich millennial generation is going full ‘gung ho’ over the ‘falling stars challenge.’
Whereas one of Hollywood’s few hits of this year, a comedy movie called ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ already highlighted the growing divide between Asia’s super wealthy and the rest of the 99%, this new picture trend will only take that one step further.

It all started in Russia over the summer and became wildly popular as from August where children of tycoons started picturing themselves as if they had fallen out of a luxury car, private plane or helicopter, showing off as much bling in the process and spreading it neatly around you (think handbags, jewelry, phones, laptops, tablets and so on).

And now it has marched on steadily to reach the wealthier part of the Chinese population as well.
This is surprising because of two reasons.
Firstly, ever since President Xi Jinping rose to power in China there has been an understanding amongst ordinary Chinese that showing off your wealth is not done and that the Communist party would return to its roots. Golfing is seen as bad, soccer as good for example. Another telling story was that of actress Fan BingBing who was not seen for more than two months after authorities accused her of tax evasion.
Secondly, most Chinese super wealthy know about this and the generation of baby boomers has not participated in this trend. Hence ordinary Chinese are shocked to see that their children are allowed to act out like this and show off their ‘inherited’ wealth, because they thus understand that the current generation of rich Chinese does not know what their offspring is doing online.
Get ready to see some rich New Yorker post one of these soon. My money is on one of the Kardashians.
