Australia – Instagram Parody Secretly Used For Diet Website ‘Before’ Pictures

Celeste Barber is a household name, both in Australia as a comedienne and on social media as someone who mocks celebrities by making parodies of their stylish pictures.

Her channel on Instagram, where she launched the hashtag #celestechallengeaccepted, sees Ms. Barber, a normal woman, imitate the poses of celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin or Beyonce for either stylish magazine shoots or their own social media.

The parody is that Ms. Barber copies that picture without the help of a whole team of stylists, personal coaches, photographers, or make-up artists. Afterward the puts the two images next to each other with a funny side note.

The effect is not only comical but also a strong social commentary on the seemingly perfect world of Instagram.

The difference, Ms. Barber says, comes down to appearances: “One of them is a banging hot model and the other one is, well, me.”

“I never started out for it to be a body positive thing or be like, ‘fuck yeah’. It was always like, this is how celebrities get out of the pools and I’m like no, this is how you get out of the pool.”

One of her fans last week notified her that a company on the WishShopping website was selling dietary supplements using Ms. Barber’s pictures as a ‘before-and-after’ reference.

Miss April Dunn wrote: “Did you know some company on Wish Shopping is using your photos to sell diet patches? I love how funny your photos are but I figured you should know!”

It took a few days before that post reached Celeste, who has about 5 million followers on Instagram, but in the end, she did call out the online retailer on social media insisting they should not be using her images to “sell body shaming products.”

The online retailer has now retracted the ad in question and apologized to the comedienne.
