As the first Central American migrant caravan assembled in Honduras a few weeks ago and crossed into neighbouring Guatemala, the White House administration made it clear that the leaders of the respective nations that the people were citizens of, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, should be reminded of their meeting with VP Pence at the Conference for Prosperity and Security in Central America earlier.

At the time, the US Vice-President, during his meeting with Honduran President Mr Juan Orlando Hernandez, President Mr Jimmy Morales of Guatemala and Vice President Mr Oscar Ortiz of El Salvador, asked all three countries to step up and help combat illegal immigration in return for help. It has since become clear to the White House administration that the caravans (there are now multiple ones heading for the US Southern Border) are not spontaneously organized but clearly a political statement. The governments in question are threatened of having their aid packages from the US cut and are eager to help where they can, proving that the caravan is not an organization of theirs.

Vice President Mike Pence over the weekend confirmed that intelligence indicates that the migrant caravans are organized by leftist political organizations and activists. During a phone call with Juan Orlando Hernández, the president of Honduras, this much was confirmed to him.
Mr Pence stated: “What the president of Honduras told me is that the caravan was organized by leftist organizations, political activists within Honduras, and he said it was being funded by outside groups, and even from Venezuela.”
“So the American people, I think, see through this—they understand this is not a spontaneous caravan of vulnerable people.”

The multiple caravans now heading for the US are estimated to carry as many as 14,000 people altogether. They over the weekend refused an offer from Mexico for asylum and schooling for their children.
