The severe storms that have been ravaging Italy all week have once again claimed deadly victims. During a "dramatic intervention" in the village of Casteldaccia near Palermo, divers found the bodies of nine family members in a flooded country house in Sicily.
The family was killed when they were surprised by the rapidly rising water in a house on the river. Survivors say that the victims were part of two families and that there are also three children among the dead, as well as the parents and grandparents of the children.

The Mayor of Casteldaccia, Mr Giovanni Di Giacinto, admitted that “a terrible tragedy has struck us.”
The family is said to have sheltered in the house built close to the riverbed. The river would never have posed a risk before.

The extreme weather also caused problems elsewhere in Sicily. In Vicari two people were in a car when it was dragged through the water. An occupant could put himself in safety in time; the other was found dead. A doctor went missing in Corleone.

For more than a week now, large parts of Italy have been struggling with heavy rain, storms, and heavy winds.
Taking into account the victims of Saturday night, the death toll now rises well above thirty.
The head of civil protection called the situation in the north of the country Saturday "apocalyptic."

Winds uprooted millions of trees with speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour, and mudslides were destroying streets. There is no electricity and drinking water in many places.
