An anti-political movement in France has swept the country as some 700,000 people have organized via social media and vowed to block the roads and gas stations this weekend. As from tomorrow, President Macron (who has seen his popularity ratings fall to ever further lows), will have to explain why France is coming to a standstill over the rising fuel prices which consist mainly of state taxes.

Mr Macron went onto state broadcaster TF1 yesterday to try and convince the French to change their mind but the latest polls indicate that some 73% of citizens approve of the action being taken. The President, as well as his Prime Minister Eduard Philippe, have tried and convince people that they understand the ‘colère’ (anger), but repeated that they would rather ‘tax fuel instead.’

The group is called ‘gilets jaunes’ or yellow jackets (as per French law you are obliged to have a yellow fluorescent jacket in your car in case of an accident). Any group of 4 people wearing yellow jackets that agree to block a road or fuel pump over the weekend can sign up and indicate on a map of France where they will be. If all that have promised to participate indeed do so, the whole of France, one of the largest countries in Europe, will normally come to a complete standstill over the weekend.

The French are furious about the ever rising fuel prices. In the past year, the diesel price has gone up by 23 percent, and petrol by 15 percent. A liter of diesel now costs more than €1,60 ($1,84).
According to the French government, the price increase of the past few years mostly has an ecological reason: they wants as few diesel cars on the French roads as possible.
In 2011, 70 percent of French cars still had a diesel engine, now that's only 39 percent. But that decline is not enough for President Macron.

EU 10 years ago:
You have to buy expensive diesel cars. The taxes are high and expensive but at least its environmentally friendly.
EU now:
You have to get rid of your expensive diesel car because its very dirty and bad for peoples health and the environment.
