Did Twitter Boss Dorsey Knowingly Lie To US Congress?

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey may have lied during a Committee hearing regarding the telecommunications sector before US Congress. Among other things, the controversial history of Twitter’s random censorship was questioned during that hearing.

Apparently, Mr Dorsey was also not have fully honest about alleged death threats to prominent politicians. He would also have lied about discrimination on the social media platform on the basis of political preference.

Mr Dorsey claimed at the time that Twitter does not take into account the political opinions of users when censoring content.

The 41-year-old tech figure repeatedly denied any intentional bias from Twitter in a monotone voice while Democrats attacked Republicans' allegations in far more strident terms.

Democratic Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Doyle was blunt: "It's a load of crap," whilst Republicans claimed it was clear social media platforms were taking sides.

Twitter has not yet answered the additional questions from the Committee Members. The deadline doing so was 15 October. Lying under oath against Members of Congress is a Federal Offence in the US.

Missouri Senator-Elect Josh Hawley tweeted on Tuesday about Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s apparent lies to Congress and called for an investigation of the social media publishing company.

Mr Hawley said “The new Congress needs to investigate and find out. Twitter is exempt from liability as a “publisher” because it is allegedly “a forum for a true diversity of political discourse.” That does not appear to be accurate.”

A top House committee that oversees the U.S. telecommunications industry is now reviewing whether Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey lied to Congress during a hearing about Twitter’s controversial history of arbitrarily censoring content published by the site, an aide for the House Energy and Commerce committee admitted: “The committee is aware of Twitter’s actions and is currently reviewing Mr. Dorsey’s testimony.”
