West Africa - 10-Year-Old Girl Dies In Female Genital Mutilation Operation

The barbaric tradition of cutting off the female sexual organ for pleasure is still alive and well.

Let me paint a picture for you and offer a fair warning that this will contain graphic information. Imagine being a 10-year-old girl whose family is forcing you to go through an initiation ritual in Sierra Leone. That initiation ritual involves having the clitoris sliced off, and then having the majority of the vaginal opening cut and then stitched together. This tradition takes away the female's pleasure from sex which is also very painful as a result of the vaginal opening being nearly sown shut.

This also makes having a child impossible without cutting the vaginal opening open, again, just so that the baby can be removed when they are born. This story is a reality for millions of young girls across the planet, including certain jurisdictions in the United States.

The story I just described is true, and sadly the 10-year-old girl who was forced to undergo the barbaric ritual died as a result of a botched operation. The woman in charge of these so-called "initiations" has been arrested by authorities in Sierra Leon. An investigation into the incident has been initiated as well, according to the unit commander of the Mile 91 police division Amadu Turay.

Turay confirmed the cause of death in a public statement saying, "She died of blood loss". The unit commander added that the blood loss is believed to have been the result of female genital mutilation. Sadly, this is a very common practice and this particular group initiated 67 young girls which means those 67 girls had their genitals mutilated, probably while they were held down and without anesthetic which is common in countries such as Sierra Leone and in the Middle East.

Female genital mutilation is nothing short of an epidemic of torture and it is widely practiced in West Africa especially. Those who undergo female genital mutilation as a form of "initiation" are inducted into secret societies which have signification political influence. The numbers of women who have undergone this procedure are staggering. The United Nations compiled data which showed 9 out of 10 women have been the victim of female genital mutilation.

As I mentioned earlier, the ritual involves the partial or total removal of the female sexual pleasure organ called the clitoris. This was not the only death as a result of the barbaric ritual either. In 2016, a 19-year-old woman died as a result of her own operation. Activists are working to develop a strategy to bring an end to female genital mutilation but are still lacking government support, according to the former deputy minister of social welfare, gender and children’s affairs, Rugiatu Turay.
