Germany – Terror Alert In All Airports

Germany issued a terror alert for all its domestic airports since yesterday, urging the public to be ‘extra cautious’ and adding police forces where possible. The timing of the alert, which coincides with the stopping of operations at Gatwick airport in the UK, the second biggest airport in London, seems peculiar to some.

According to German media, the police are looking for four suspects with an Islamic background who might plan an attack on an airport in Southwest Germany. The men were previously spotted at the airports of Stuttgart and Paris where they behaved suspiciously. The German authorities have now issued a security alert at all German airports.

According to German terrorism expert Holger Schmidt, two of the suspects are a father and son who live in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Previously, they had been noticed by the French security services because they had taken photographs in the airport terminal of 'Charles de Gaulle' in Paris in the day after the attack on the Christmas market in Strasbourg. Then they were spotted at Stuttgart airport this week as well.

In Stuttgart, the men filmed the airport grounds and the terminal. Through surveillance cameras the pair was quickly noticed by security services, but a patrol came just too late to catch them.

German investigators also received information from Moroccan intelligence service that warned of an attack on an airport in Germany or France. The Moroccan intelligence service intercepted suspicious chat conversations. This involved an attack on an airport in the French-German border area as revenge against the West. "They are waging war against Islam, my brothers and I are here to fight them", it sounded.

The German police have stepped up security measures in all airports. Heavy-armed agents walk around Frankfurt Airport. According to a spokesman for the airports, air traffic is nevertheless "completely normal".
