Norway - Christmas Car Thief Calls Police For Help

It is almost the end of the year and we have a late entry for stupidest criminal again. This time a would-be robber in Norway managed to get in but not out of the Volvo he was trying to steal. As he had been in contact with the police for petty crime in the past, he figured he would call them again to help him get out.

“He called us just before 8am on Christmas Eve from inside the car he had just broken into,” Mr Ebbe Kimo, the operations manager for the Trøndelag police force in central Norway, declared in an interview with the state broadcaster NRK.

The young lad had managed to get into a brand new Volvo parked outside of the car dealership, just near the provincial prison in fact, without as much as scratching the car. However, it was the centralized locking system which turned on only a few minutes after he had gotten into the vehicle which proved to be his undoing.

“He couldn’t open the doors. He knows us quite well and clearly thought it would be okay to call us for help. A bit like calling a friend, really.”

“He sounded quite stressed and desperate when he called us, and I think he was relieved when we arrived.”
Officer Kimo added that the 17-year-old was “perhaps not the most knowledgeable car thief. On his previous attempts, he was at least able to get out of the car.”

Norway police hopes that the young man would go home “to a hopefully warm Christmas celebration … It’s nice to be able to call the police when you’re stuck.”
