Law enforcement says that a man signed in to Lebanon’s Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire to visit his 70-year-old mother and then killed her.
According to the State Attorney General Gordon MacDonald, the man, 49-year-old Travis Frink signed into the intensive care unit of the facility for what appeared to be a family visit and then gunfire erupted in what he called a “tragic attack”.
Dozens of police officers flocked to the scene in what was being described as an “active shooter situation” at the hospital.
Both hospital staff and patients were evacuated to prevent a mass killing rampage as police searched the perimeter to locate the gunman.
Witnesses said that Frink was able to be apprehended as he tried to escape from the scene in his vehicle, and cops subdued him.
“The facts gathered to this point reveal that the purpose of Mr. Frink’s visit to the hospital today was to kill his mother,” MacDonald told reporters Tuesday night.
At this time it remains unclear what had driven Frink to kill his mother but investigators say that in 2013 Frink’s wife and three-year-old child were found dead inside of a running car which was littered with alcohol.
At the time that case was ruled out as having no foul play involved, and it could be that Frink suffers from severe trauma from that loss.
Frink has now been charged with first-degree murder and will have an arraignment in the morning.
