Texas - Foster Care Runaway Denies Killing University of Texas Dance Major

The 20-year-old former foster care runaway on trial in the slaying of a University of Texas freshman on campus in 2016 took to the stand and denied murdering the female victim.

Defense attorney Ariel Payan on Wednesday pointedly asked Meechaiel Criner: “Mick, did you kill Haruka Weiser?’ Criner replied: “No, Sir.”

Weiser, then an 18-year-old freshman student, dance major from Portland, Oregon, was just walking to her dormitory after leaving a rehearsal when someone just came up to her, strangled her and sexually assaulted her.

Criner was charged with capital murder for the gruesome killing of Weiser. He was then a 17-year-old foster care runaway. Prosecutors said items belonging to Weiser including her school backpack were found at places the runaway was then staying. Criner in his testimony claimed he only found said items from trash bins.

The Weiser's killing rocked the campus as it marked the first time that a murder had taken place inside the university since 1966. The deplorable murder sent shockwaves through the school and surrounding community. That is also why many from the campus and the entire University of Texas community have a strong interest in the court proceedings of the case - all the way to the eventual decision.

Police said during the investigation that a surveillance video released then showing a “person of interest” with a bicycle, near where the body was found, was crucial in the arrest of Criner.

Investigators said then that the teenager appeared to be homeless and was not a student of the university.

Shortly after, a woman also reported a small trash fire in Austin and said that the same man on the surveillance video on campus is the one who started the fire.

yes it seems like a strategy on the part of the defense to make him look respectable in a tie and suit. no amount of decent clothing can hide the filth. he ruined a promising life of a theater arts/dance major. please lock him up!!!

I remember this. Security camera showed him take out a shiny object that looked like a knife and follow her to a dark area. What a horrible trade off for society. He gets to live and she doesn't.
