The Australian media has been focused on one thing and one thing only for the past few days: the cricket ball-tampering scandal (during the South Africa – Australia test match) which has hurt the national pride of its citizens and brought emotional apologies from Prime Minister Turnbull as well as the players of the national team.

Today was the turn of the man at the centre of the scandal himself, Mr David Warner. As many others, he was also clearly overcome with emotion when offering a countrywide apology for his behaviour in a choking voice. Mr Warner stated that he had unfortunately made a decision that he “will regret as long as I live”.
“First and foremost in my mind is the wellbeing of family.”
“In the back of my mind I suppose there is a tiny ray of hope that I may one day be given the privilege of playing for my country again, but I am resigned to the fact that that may never happen.”

“It’s tough for me to talk about where my thought space was on that day, given the circumstances of what happened in Durban,” Mr Warner continued.
“But I am here to take full responsibility for my actions, for the part that I played on day three at Newlands in Cape Town.”

When asked by the press whether he understood the country’s shame over his actions, he stated: “I’m not surprised at all, we let our country down.”
“We made a bad decision. I played my part in that but, as I said, it’s going to take a long time to earn that respect back from the Australian public.”
For his actions during the game, Mr Warner was handed a 1-year ban by the Australian cricket federation and his sponsors (like LG and Asics) have dropped their dealings with him.

the real error committed here is assuming cricket is a real sport. cricket belongs in the category of such pastimes as wiffle -ball and tiddly-winks
