For the first time in history, the UK capital London has a higher crime rate than New York (both cities have a population of about 8.5 million, but very different gun laws). February marked the first time that there were more murders in the British city than in the Big Apple, with 15 dead (of which nine were aged 30 or younger).

Furthermore, London is bound to keep that title for a while as March saw 22 fatal stabbings and shootings, which is also higher than the 21 suffered in New York. In the past 16 days alone, 11 people were murdered in London.

Ever since Mayor Rudy Giuliani ‘cleaned up’ New York in the 1990s, the city’s murder rate has been steadily decreasing (it saw an 87% drop from its peak). London at the same time saw its murder rate increase by some 40% in the last three years (not including deaths by the various terrorist attacks the city has experienced).

Mr Jacob Whittingham, the charity head of programmes ‘Fight for Peace’, commented: “What's scary about London is the randomness of the crime. With young people in London, you have no idea if and when you may be the victim of a violent crime, that's why they feel the need to carry weapons.”

2017 already saw 80 fatal stabbing deaths in London. Experts agree that the number will be higher in 2018.
Met Police Chief Ms Cressida Dick claims London’s police forces plan to increase stop and search to counter this: “Victims’ parents all say, “Get out and do more”, so it’s one thing you’ll see in the next year. We won’t be held back by political correctness. ‘But it will be fair and irrespective of race.”
